Take a Step

A sound walk experience showcased at UABB (Urbanism\Architecture Bi-City Biennale of Shenzhen and Hong Kong) in 2023, with Yue Sheng, Hexin Deng, and Zilu Tang.

Inspiration from actual fieldwork in a Hakka House, Dawan Residence in Shenzhen, China, we recorded local and vibrant sound clips, and created an Sound Walk Map and Audio to help curious tourists find local stories. Through this exploration of the sounds, we aim to evoke a sense of place and imagination.

Key Concept:

  • Local Hakka people have a deep emotional attachment to their homeland.
  • Newly formed urban villages have made non-locals into a new type of “Guests (客)” which also a kind of “Hakka(客家)”.
  • Tourists can act as “Guests” to better understand local Hakka culture.

The entire HTML webpage is designed with Dawan’s local map as the background. It is accompanied by numerous markers representing the sampled sounds we collected from the area.

By clicking on these markers, users can discover corresponding photos and sounds from specific locations, such as the noises of renovation, the creaking sound of an old wooden door opening, and even the saxophone played by an elderly gentleman at the village entrance, and so on, which creates a sense of place and imagination within the soundscape.

You can find more details about it in the articles posted on our college’s official WeChat account here.
